Hi I am completly new to this, we have just brought our first incubater and 6 Black Maran eggs to hopefully hatch. We have our brooder/ coop etc all in place and lots of books, however the only slight query i have is regarding local by laws, is it ok to keep chickens in your back garden? We have a 50ft garden which is in the middle of a built up area, we will obvioulsy not be keeping a cockeral but are there any rules against the hens themselves???? I cannot find any info anywhere

Hi Jacqui,

There are sometimes restrictions on rented property and sometimes local councils have restrictions and bylaws in certain areas. Most of the time you're ok though.

Unless you plan to keep a cockerel and have close neighbours, you will usually find people don't mind you keeping a few hens but it is worth checking with the council and looking through any tenancy agreements if you're renting.

Check with the environmental Health department and ask for the Animal welfare officer. Also check your deeds to make sure there is no convenat on the property. If both these are OK you will not have any problems

Good luck
