Roof for run

I didn't know they came in two types Didsbury. I know that the standard 2.6mm Coraline is ok provided your not fitting it on very hot day when it can bend a little bit under you if you put too much of your weight on it, that was the main difference I found with Onduline which is 3mm thick.

Hi Dinosaw

Really must wear my reading glasses! Misread Corotherm for Coroline, any way which may be better. Is the Coroline ok and strong enough attached to with 2 x.2 roof struts or Corotherm twin wall it is more rigid, but would it roast the girls?

Sorry to be a pain asking these questions but want to keep them safe and dry, totally new to all this so many thanks for any advice given.

Loved your cat/hen pic best laugh I've had in ages

Safe and dry is important, and so is light and shade.
Depending on where your run is, green Onduline (or Wickes equivalent) will give some of the shade they need in hot conditions, but will make it a lot darker in the winter months.
Clear plastic corrugated, which I have, does let in a lovely lot of light but gets hot in summer. In my run this is mitigated by large trees which provide shade from early afternoon onwards, and also by willow screening fixed to the mesh sides on the South and West facing sides. This lets air through and creates nicely filtered shade, also some protection from wind and rain blowing in through the mesh at the sides. You may need to provide some vertical shading as well, even if you use green Onduline or equivalent.
So it's a compromise, depending on which way the run faces in relation to the sun. They must have shade, chickens cope very well with cold conditions but get distressed if exposed to hot sun with no way of cooling down. Think 'woodland edge', which is the sort of sheltered environment they would ideally choose to live in.
We just used ordinary bog standard clear plastic corrugated sheet from Wickes, and so far this has lasted well, hasn't got blown away in any of the gales we've had in the past 4 years, fixed correctly to a good wooden framework across the top. If and when it does, it's cheap and easy to replace.
You need a gutter on the low side, as otherwise the rain will run down over the edge and blow in to the run sideways.

Coraline will be fine as long as you follow the recommendations for spacing the battens which depends on what roof pitch you are using. If I remember rightly a 1 in 4 pitch needs battens at 450mm centres. My preference is for coroline/onduline over clear but as Marigold points out there are some situations where clear may come out better.

Thank you both again, I would be totally lost without your really brilliant advice.

I have no choice but to put the run on the patio, so it will run west to east and face south, there will be some shade from the shed. I like the idea of the willow screening and will need some other forms of planted shade.

Many thanks again for help and advice
