i brought one of those red top fly catchers and i am unsure if wether it can be hung with in the chicken run or not on the package it says can be hung 5 metres away from where flys breed or away from composts muck heaps and animal housing ? anyone else used them and put them directly in the run of course hung high so the birds dont get near them .

What is causing you to have so many flies, Karminski, at quite a cool and early time in the year?
Could you perhaps deal with the origin of the fly problem, rather than hanging up fly papers? In any case you are unlikely to catch more then a very small proportion of the flies, I would think.

Hi Karminski, I've used the red top fly catchers (if they're the same ones - a bag and lid contraption with hormone powder you add water to and hang up, the hormone mix attracts the flies who crawl through a gap in the 'red top' and then can't get out again). I found they take a couple of weeks to start working but once they do start they're good and there's a noticeable drop in the fly population.

I would say that if there's no chance the chickens can reach the fly trap then it's not a problem but otherwise I'd hang it near but outside their immediate area. One other thing, these traps can be quite flimsy so be careful when changing them - the last thing you would like - I'm sure - is to have lots of dead and rotting flies tip all over you in the hormone solution as happened to one of my neighbours - yuck!

well i poo pick every single day even in the pouring rain so why i get quite so many i dont know and as its been warming up slighty the flies have started to come out more i have read that these are the best around so thought why not try it but now i am reading horror stories like they smell like hell etc so i am concerned wether i can put it in the run or not it wont be put anywhere close where the girls can get at it  believe me if anything i will hang it out side ontop of the run of one of the angle bars if i can get up that high .this one i got of the chicken vet website along with the red mite spray { no mites for 4 days now :D :D :D } so its not the cheap copycat one .

I use red top fly catchers as well as the 'cheap and cheerful' ones. They work, and work well! I've got them hung up around and about the place as we live close to commercially reared pigs, as well as having folk on either side with geese and chickens.

They stink to high heaven, so try and keep them a bit of a distance from where you sit outside your house! lol

There are a hang of a lot of flies around at the moment - they all seem to have hatched in the last two weeks or so, in spite of cleaning, clearing and everything else! Don't know where they all come from - big ones, little ones and in between ones!

think i might attach it to the far corner of the run from the angle beams so it will be high up out of everyones way the plot holder behind me dosent show her face once every 4 months so it wont bother her and the other side i could not care about   sorted i will try one out :-)05 now wheres that gas mask think i will need it i am pretty weak when it comes to dodgy smells :-)03
