Red Stop for redmite

I imagine it is a garlic and herb based supplement. A compound derived from garlic is supposed to be very unappetising to red mite.

well i add gralic to thier water and its fresh garlic gloves and i still get red mite found another nest today they soon died got to get some more stuff tomorrow a bit of online shopping i think   feeding garlic to horses is meant to make thier blood taste yuk so flies dont bite but thats rubbish as well .

never heard of tansy ?
i found another little nest of mites yesterday in a crack on one of my perches so they were killed and sprayed completely so today i thought i would get some ficam w but after readding tons of posts on the stuff i am personally unsure wether to use it or not so i think i will order a bottle or 2 of this stuff and give it a go :D although it does sound like it wont work overnight so only time is going to tell .

Found a Wiki article on the tansy, and some interesting reading on the repellent qualities of this herb, especially against ticks, another blood sucking nasty!

I think it might be useful in combination with a redmite defense regime, would be interesting to see some scientific research data.

Here is a another bit of reading around herbs and poultry in general. Tansy is mentioned here also alongside
others such as fennel, rosemary, mugwort, lavender and pennyroyal. I already use lavender and hang a sprig in my larger houses.

Thanks for doing the research Foxy, I knew I had read recently that Tansy can be toxic to humans but cannot remember the context.

I am a great believer in using natural substances where possible but do have concerns about depending on old texts and tales. A lot of what was used in the "ancient world" is fine but more recent (ie mediaeval onwards)ideas can be downright dangerous - using arsenic and white lead as cosmetics for instance. I also think some more recent texts can work on the basis of "if a little is good, more must be better" which is by no means always true.

The list in herbcottage is interesting but they don't give quantities to add to feed plus, according to Wiki, different compounds are at different strengths during the growth of the plant, which could affect the toxicity to hens.

The idea of a herb garden for the chooks is quite appealing, but can one really trust them to eat only what they need and not overdose? Humans (including me) can't do that but maybe hens are more intelligent!!

well i will be a guinea pig or shall i say the girls will be  as i have ordered to bottles only £12 as well good price will report on how it goes but no doubt it will take a few weeks to see what happens and if it works but i was wanderingif itsok to give to horses as well ??? the flies get so inmune to any fly sprays so quickly nowadays that i end up putting sudocream just in side thier ears and that seems to prevent them entering .will read up on all that later foxy thanks for the links :D

got the stuf today and its measured and in thier waters so i will report back in time with results :D :D appartently 50ml bottle should last 6 chickens about 1 year so not bad going for just under £6 .
