Just thought I would share some information from my own experience. We have a lovely big eucalyptus tree in and over our chicken enclosure. We never have any problems with mites because of it! apparently it's a natural deterrent! So those looking to keep chooks long term plant some eucalyptus trees! :D
*Please be aware Eucalyptus is toxic in many animals, particularly cats so be sure you read up on the cautions to be taken if you choose to have them with cats. We have three cats and have no problems with the leaves that fall, but we do not allow the cats near the wood or bark.*

Hope this helps! :D

Interesting. Make sure if you plant one, you keep it under control as they grow huge.

I have removed a couple of the last comments.. I didn't think they are particularly helpful to the thread and I don't like seeing sarcastic comments between members. Please help us to keep our forum a pleasure to read ;)

As for the Eucalyptus Tree - that's a fantastic tip that I hadn't heard of before. I know they ran some red mite tests recently with essential oils at Newcastle Uni and out of the 50 they chose, Eucalyptus was one of the oils that made it into the 'effective' category...

I wonder if a hen house be made from eucalyotus wood how good would be for them?,or maybe made pearches from branches if you do not have a whole tree? :D

eek, not sure? i know it's highly flammable so it's not really used in building much! would be a cool idea though in theory! :-)17
