well i have been infested with red mite in the chicken house again, we burnt the last one about 8 months ago so i am not burning this one.
for 4 weeks now every day i have cleaned out their house i only put in hay in the nesting box i then clean it out and burn it straight away, i then spray the house with mite spray and jeyes fluid. I got some drop on the neck for the chickens from the vets (not dog and cat vets but cattle and horses vets) they made up a concoction for me.
now 1 month later i think that is the end of them, it's the first time i have not found any mites in their house, i will carry on for 1 more week and i think that should of seen them off, i have got to admit it has been really hard work doing this every day when i get home from work but it has been worth it, i have put D E all over the house and also some in there dig area so they can throw the D E and ash over them self.
hopefully that will be the end of them.

You can see why we took to route of a spare coop and creosote every year then Rita. If you have lots of coops you still only need one spare, until you have about 10, then you need two spare. Local breeder had 4 spare for her creosote routine. Wood ash is a good idea in the soil bath. Problem we had was we burned two bags of logs and ended up with a tiny amount of ash -not half a fire shovel full. I think it works by being very dusty and fine which must affect the red mite -perhaps they suffocate?

cheers for that i have not tried wood ash, i have put Diatom earth where they take a dust bath so i hope this has helped them.
how long does it take for creosote to dry i could wait until we get a nice day (could be waiting a long time) and do their house, also where do you get it from B&Q don't sell any, it's not been banned has it, they ban everything that works. :-)07

Creosote is under contolled supply Rita. Not for the general public -agricultural trade only. So you would need to approach an agricultural store and try to get some. We have an agricultural holding number so not a problem for us. Some stores will sell it no questions asked. 25 litres is the minimum quantity in ours and it's £42 +VAT. If you dilute it 50:50 with paraffin it soaks in much faster, dries much quicker, loses none of the mite killing qualities and dries lighter without a sticky surface. We don't do the nest boxes because fumes are given off in hot weather. Takes about 2 weeks to dry sufficiently and that's with it done dismantled. Would say a month if the coop isn't dismantled and left with the door and pophole open but then you need a chemical mask and suit to protect yourself from fumes and splashes in an enclosed space. Toxic stuff! That's why it will probably be totally banned soon. Also why you need a spare coop.

They do 20 litres and 25 litres and carriage is £8.00 so a bit chepaer than where Chris gets his. Although we have a farm holding number I wasn't asked for confirmation that we are a business. (I cancelled the order because I found some creosote buried in the back of one of the sheds).

You are, afet all a Poultry Keeper and need it for the animal housing - not Joe Public wanting it for his fence posts.

Hi there all, reading your posts get me thinking re the plastic chicken coop idea, I'm a bathroom fitter so we use a waterproofing compound to seal the wall before we tile, the stuffs like a thick laytex compound and drys Gray and flexible.

I was thinking at it would be a great solution for the red mite issues we are having as my plan is the clean, disinfect and the seal out the new creepy crawlers with the laytex stuff

The cost for the kit is around 70 quid be I'm sure you can find it cheaper if you shop around

I was thinking at the seal it out solution is cheaper than a new coup

Hi Rita,
I use diatomaceous earth (Diatom) to get rid/prevent red mite. 3 years ago i had a bad outbreak and treated with Daitom powder no red mite 3 days later and it has never returned. I put the powder in an empty cleaned out washing up bottle and dust the house thoroughly put in fresh straw and dust the top of the straw which the chickens nest in and this kills any mites on the chickens aswell.
I found large quantities of Diatom available on E-bay which driver the price down considerably,
