Really sick hen

When I went to shut the chooks up last night I noticed that Daisy was missing... I found her inside the coop (not sure how long she had been there) and she had masses of clear mucus hanging about 6 inches down from her nostrils, and all down her chest. I have never seen anything like it. She was also rattling really badly. There is no smell. She was not like that yesterday morning so this must have come on incredibly quickly. Is this mycoplasma or something more serious?

I took her inside and cleaned up all the mucus, including from inside her mouth (she had loads coming down through the sinus), and then gave her some high energy powder dissolved in water + tylan. I put her in a box by the aga all night.

Today, she is not really any better. She is pretty alert, not really doing the sick chicken stance, but the rattling is awful. There is not so much mucus today but she still has some coming through her sinus into her mouth. She doesn't want to eat...

I have been giving her more of the energy water/tylan mix but I'm wondering whether it would be better to put her to sleep? Do chickens ever recover when the rattling is bad? Is there something else that I should be giving her? I have put the rest of the chooks on tylan as a precaution and Daisy is still isolated.

Any advice very gratefully received.

Hi, if you can't take her to a vet- then it is probably best to cull her- she sounds in a bad way, a vet would be my best advice, sorry, hope she makes it.
regards, David :)

Many bacteria are NOT sensitive to Tylan--may well just need a different antibiotic so at least a chat with the vet would be a good idea. Some of mine recently had a respiratory infection , the cultured bacterium being only sensitive to amoxycillin et al. I hope she makes it ok . Ros

Well, I have taken her to the vet and she has had a steroid injection... vet also suggested lemsip so I have added that to the tylan/soluble food mix.... Will let you know how we get on, thanks for your advice. Fingers crossed!
