RCom 20 Humidity Pad

I have the pre 2008 RCom 20, and it needs a new humidity pad. I can't find one in the US, let alone one that's reasonably priced. I've bought a cheap sponge and tried cutting holes in it, but that sponge won't get the RH above ~22%. Has anybody here used something other than RCom's pad with good results?
