R Com "Suro" Incubator

Hi folks
Just taken delivery of my first incubator, the R Com "Suro" Incubator.

I would welcome any comments or advice from anyone who uses this model on the correct temperature and humidity settings to use.
Living up here on the Isle of Skye it is still pretty chilly and windy, therefore I hope to set up the incubator in the kitchen where thetemperature usually stays between 15/20 degrees.

I find them very good, not quite as good as say the brinsea Octagon 20 Ex Advance, but its about £100 cheaper!
I find it holds the temp a treat, set up is easy. The only small grumble is that if you have high ambient humidity you might struggle to keep it low. I dry hatch to start off with then only increase in the last 2 days. So I set the humidity at no more than 33% initially, then up to 60% when they start to pip and not before.
We live in an old cottage, and the humidity in here is around 45%, the incy struggled to keep the humidity low enough for me so had to fiddle around a bit! :roll:

Thanks for the advice.
If you look at my profile you will see that I already keep a few Light Sussex.
I have located a free-ranging flock of pure bred RIR's located on Orkney so I intend to use the "Suro" to incubate the eggs when they arrive, probably this Tuesday.

Although it is my wish to keep both flocks seperate I may toy with the idea of crossing a few to see how it goes, at least the resulting chicks should be sex-linked, I will always have a problem with despatching unwanted males.
Maybe I am a big softee after all, hence my five cockerels!
 
Am borrowing a friends R com "Suro" Incubator

Candled at 17 days (been busy running late!!) last night 11 looked great so popped them back in. This morning went to check on Inky, found alarm beeping and the top fallen off and eggs a bit chilly, am GUTTED should have been my first ever hatch. It appears the cradle has malfunctioned an keeps tipping too far backwards and of course gravity takes over. The unit is 2 years old and apparently has never had an issue before.
So sad, have attempted to salvage and will turn by hand but fear all is lost.

Keep turning by hand - eggs are very forgiving things - good luck, don't forget - you would stop turning at 18 days anyway - so you'll only have to turn them today - :-)17
 
REALLY!!! You mean there IS hope and they might not have got toooo coldy???? (I know there is always hope, but have been a bit glum today). Thankfully it was not too cold last night??
All is now hugely crossed - miracle chicks may emerge!!!

I'm not promising anything, but I had a broody duck who was killed by a mink - I found her eggs hours later 4 broken with dead ducklings in them, so I rescued the other eggs and put in an incy - about 7 hours after the attack - they all hatched!!3 days later (and I didn't really know exactly when they were going to hatch - at least you know you were on day 17 - never say never - if you don't try you will always say if only.....good luck

Have just quickly candled and there is still lots of movement inside!!!!!!!!!! All crossed here!!!

I hope all goes well for your liitle birds - but I would have left them alone and NOT candled - at the stage they were at - and with the upset they had had - they would have been better off left alone.. do let us know how you get on - :D

Good luck, hope all goes well on day 21, I had an incubator that went off, must have been off for at least 8 hours and the eggs were cold, popped them in another incy and 90% of them hatched. Glad when you candled them there was movement shows that all is not lost :D :D :D
 
I know I shouldn't have candled them and I should have left them quiet, but was so glum and thought that sleep would be easier if I knew one way or the other! I won't do it again!!
My goodness this is stressfull!
All still crossed day 21 tomorrow!!

hi there just a note about your incubator,i run two of thes machines,both bought from the same company,i had problems hatching last year until i noticed that the temp reading was well out from the actual temp at the eggs,bought me two hygro thermometers of ebay,little round black and green ones,sorted,one incubator reads 38 degrees on top and 37.5 at the eggs and the other 40.8 on top and 37.5 at the eggs,quite a difference,i just wonder how two machines bought at the same time are so far out,regards and good luck :-)07

Just completed my 1st hatch in this inci & can honestly say I'm chuffed to bits with it. easy to use & soon got back up to temp & humidity when I had to take the lid off. Would highly recomend it.
 
News to report!
After last disaster R Com Suro went back to friend and I bought myself one
AND!!!!!!
THIS MORNING 5 BOUNCING CHICKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! With more pipping as I left for work, my faith is restored and I feel a real chicken breeder!!!! Am so pleased it was so easy to use and as Chuckie Chick said above really quick to return to required settings!

i have had nothin but trouble with the soro :-)19 . the temp reading was way of. then i checked the temp at different parts and the corners are not what the readout states. its colder
sooooo now i can only incubate nine eggs in the middle.
saving up for another or might just build one. :-)06
 
Maybe a fault with yours shella? I hatched 18/19 last weekend, no probs at all! :D
