hi I have got a broody hen she has been broody for a couple of day now can any one tell me if i can put fertilized eggs under her will she sit on them for the full term and do i have to remove her from the other chickens

Hi Hog

Best to remove her at night and put her in her own little coop and run. Whether she will sit till the full term is anyones guess, though if she is still sitting after a week the chances are good.
Check out this article about it should have all you need to know.

hi it is necessary to move her as I only have one other hen although I did try to move her but she would not lay in the new nest box and the other hen would not come out of her hutch when I open the door. I think she may have been lonely, I have put them back together she nesting again so i put two eggs under her at night she is still sitting this morning can it do any harm to leave them together.

If there are only two of them then the odds are that you will be ok to leave her. The danger in a big flock is that the chicks get pecked by the other birds and the mother can't protect them properly and that the other birds are constantly disrupting the broody by wanting to lay in the samenest box, eggs get kicked out etc, with two this shouldnt be much of a problem so I would leave her, just remember to mark the eggs that you want hatched so you can remove the surplus ones.

Thanks for your reply I will let you know how I get on.

Hi the broody hen has been sittihg four days now the only thing is we have not seen her get up for food or water . Any advise please Thanks

Lift her off the nest twice a day for 10-15 minutes. She will do an enormous and very smelly poo, and should have a drink and some food, and stretch her legs a bit. She's obviously sitting very well, and will be going into a sort of trance on the nest. The eggs won't be harmed by a few minutes without her on them, in fact some modern incubators build in this cooling time to their programs as it helps hatch rates. Sitting does take it out if them and she will lose weight, but will put it back on when the chicks hatch if you let her eat the high-protein chick crumb that they need.
Get your chick crumb ready before he hatch date, now she's sitting tight, and make sure it's well in date as out of date feed may harm the chicks.

Hi I'm on day 17 can you please tell me if I have to turn them one more day or not ,I have heard so many different thing on when to stop turning
The eggs .

Hi Hog, You don't need to turn eggs under a broody so I should leave them alone.

Hi I have got some eggs in a incubator and they are also on there17th day do I have two turn them any more

In incubators I stop turning on day 18 providing they are regular sized chicken eggs.
