prolapse in duck

Hi there, i said i would give an update on my duck.you gave such great advice and i was all set to sort things out but things took aturn for the worst last night :shock: she had a prolapse and while over the years i have seen a couple of animals with a prolapse,i wasn't prepared for this. she was bleeding so badly that there was nothing we could do.we eventually had to put her down.could this have been down to the drake??he was very demanding of her yesterday and i wonder could i have prevented it.i got three new ducks today because he was quite distressed all night and this morning and i thought the company would settle him but he is like little savage out there now and i'm worried for them now.seriously thinking of giving him away to someone who has alot more ducks. cara :?

I too have had a duck with a prolapse this year. I'm not 100% sure what caused it, but we do have too many drakes. The duck with the prolapse was born in September though, and she started laying in mid February, so I wondered too if she might have been quite young to start laying, and that would have caused it. She has also laid some quite big eggs. She is a white campbell duck and besides her mate, the rest are all Shetland Ducks - quite a bit bigger, so maybe the drakes have been too much for her.

I got the vet to stitch up her prolapse. This seemed to work fine, until she started laying again, and her poor bottom came out. She's gone into moult now,and the drakes don't seem as bad as they were, and I think her bottom has maybe healed itself, as it looks its functioning more normally now, and doesn't seem to be sticking out.

Maybe you could keep your drake locked away from the ducks for a while, until his hormones dampen down? Maybe this would make him worse though! Maybe if you don't want any baby ducks you could ask the vet to do something?! Don't know if vets are in the business of sorting drakes though

Would be interested to hear how you get on with him.

hi hazel. our problem was [ i think ] that we only had one duck and one drake.the poor duck hadn't a chance really.we have since got three more and when we brought them home the drake was dreadful :shock: we thought the company would settle him,so what we did was give him to someone who had thirteen ducks i was so relieved to be able to sort things out in a way that gave him the freedom ...and harem..he so obviously needed :lol: cara

A duck and drake should work ok together - he must have had a hormone problem! Lets hope he's having fun with his 13 ducks Did you get a new drake?

no hazel, we decided against getting a drake...BUT.... we now have a feeling that one of our [ducks] might be a drake.we bought it as a duck and to my mind she still is.we got 2 khaki cambells and a beautiful black and white pol duck.don't know what breed ! in my heart i think she is a duck .very vocal ,loud harsh quack,no curl on her tail feather but so far two people have told us they think its a drake :? and thers me checking for eggs every morning ..ah well we'l wait and see.....cara
