HI everyone.

I have a problem with 2 of the 3 burford brown chicks I got the eggs from a person off ebay near the Gloucester/Hereford border.

They don't seam to be able to get up on their legs.

I also hatched all 7 of my own cream leg bar eggs all from one hen (I only have one pure bred girl) and they and all the others I have hatched this year are fine.

The 8 cream leg bar eggs I got from the same person were all unfertilised when I candled them

They were all hatched in my r-com suro with the foam mesh pad it comes with on the bottom. As we had less eggs in there the chicks had a lot more room in the incubator than last time - I don't know if that made any difference.

Is there anything I can do for these chicks to help them? And/or anything I can do next time?

Any help would be great as this is only the second year we have hatched chicks and last year we did so with a broody hen and we got our cream leg bar hen.

Thanks so much,

Greenhen

Hello, do you mean they have splayed legs? you need to try and tie their legs together - make a little splint to fit in between their legs- just make sure it's not rubbing and check daily- after a few days they should be fine- good luck.

Thanks David

What would you suggest we splint them with?

Thanks again,

Greenhen

Hi Greenhen, when exactly did they hatch? Have they fluffed up OK?
I have treated spraddle leg successfully with Micropore tape, which is a sort of tape you can buy cheaply from any chemist.

HI,

They hatched yesterday first thing in the morning. They fluffed op slowly and were in with the rest in the brooder in the evening.

I have some micro pore so I will go and try and do something tonight with them.

Thanks for your help,

Greenhen

They may just be a bit slow to get up,specially as they were slow to feather up. Are they warm enough in the brooder? They may just need a little extra tlc. What sort of arrangement do you have, I mean electric hen or heat lamp. The other thing you can do is add a little warm honey or sugar to their water and encourage them to drink. Good luck with them! :)

HI,

Thanks so much for the help.

They are back in the incubator tonight after having a drink of sugary water and having some medical tape put on them to try and splint their legs.

If any one has done this before and could describe how the splinted them that would be a great help.

Thanks again for all the help,

Greenhen
