Does anybody know if you can get vet insurance for your hens? I've looked on the web and you can get insurance for dogs and cats to cover vet bills etc but no policies cover other animals like chickens.

I doubt its hardly worth it. Most instances you can treat ailments at home. And many vets have no real poultry experience so its often very hit and miss they will be able to do anything. I'd read up on how to treat illnesses and injury in your hens and put it into practice when needed. Most times I've been able to resolve my chooks health problems and only 3 times have I ever gone to a vet. Twice was for Tylan and once for Baytril. Vet injected the bird for me but I was happy to learn myself also so I could do so in future and therefore save on costs and only needed the medication and needle then.

I'd suggest checking round your local vets and finding one with a poultry experienced vet and registering there. Then I'd stick a fiver/tenner in a pot each month and use then if and when you need to toward vet bills.

I've been lucky and have had 2 good poultry vets who never charged extortionate prices to treat chooks. Many non experienced poultry vets charge a small fortune. I'm appalled when I read people fork out over £100 for a crop to be cut open and drained when it only cost me £32 total. It does pay to shop around and find a decent vet.
