I always find it fascinating as it shows which breeds were popular at the time and how much they have changed. I think the first three pages of the Lewis Wright ones is particularly nice to look at.

Never heard of Ayam Jallak before. Are they now known by another name?
 
Absolutely fantastic, I have some old bird books and some of the drawings are amazing, which is why I bought them at a boot sale. I really admire the attention to detail in these type of art works
 
Wonderful pictures - and what an amazing, masterly process of production. When I think how hard it is to get a decent photo of my hens, because they're always moving, it must be harder to draw them freehand in the first place.
Some of the birds look very like their aristocratic owners, don't they?
 
I'm fortunate to have a copy of Wright's "The Practical Poultry Keeper" ; it's the 20th edition. It has a few beautiful coloured plates but obviously they are quite small and don't compare with these!
