Hi I'm very worried about my buff Pekin hen. I have three I got them about 5 weeks ago two are now started laying but one has been looking abit down but now she sits there fluffed up with her eyes closed( one eye always stays closed). She is eating and drinking they all been wormed and have avc everyday, I'm taking it to the vet at 3 but any advice on here before I go

The vet gave me eye drops any advice plse people I'm really worried now

the symptomes you describe can mean all sorts of things, hens when they don't feel great often fluff up and close their eyes. I live in scotland and we have had really bad weather over the last 2 weeks (unlike people further south) the other day we had snow, hail, and 4° temps all with a gale force wind - I have 8 young birds now with upper respitory infections - and they had exactly the same way of being as yours - did your vet listen to it's breathing?? can you hear any noise when it breaths?? is it's poo normal?? does it feel "hot" can you smell a sweet sickly smell coming from it (like pear drops smell)?? does it have any discharge from either nostrils and/or eyes.. have you checked for red mite, that can bring a small bird down very quickly as they become anaemic.. or lice?? what did your vet say was wrong with your bird??

Thankyou for the reply, the vet didn't really know much about chickens, she seemed quite scared so I picked her up. The poo is normal I can not hear no wheezing or see no discharge. But looking at her left eye it seems milky and quite swollen and she does seem to shake her head and sneezes

I am still a newbie to chook keeping but the symptoms sound abit like mycoplasma. 4 of my chooks had it soon after I bought them and they were treated with antibiotics (Tylan). The only thing is you can only get it under prescription from the vet.
Dorinda will no doubt be able to give you sound advice. Hope your girl will be ok; keep us posted.

I'm no vet - but I would ask your vet for Tylan soluable - you put it in the water.. - swelling around the eyes and sneezing could very well be an upper respiritory bug - affecting sinus, which makes the eyes swell - don't you have any poultry friendly vets near you??
