Can someone please advice me, one of my hens was acting strange last night she keep giving one cluck and stretching her head and gasping for breath when strethching her neck and head, it has been very hot here in France and I thought that was the problem and now she is hiding under my car, she won't run away when I try to touch her which is most unusual, I am very worried about her, can anyone advice?

Hello, has she got any discharge? bubbly eyes? raspy, smelly breath? or is she just gaping? If so, she may have gape worm- have you wormed them recently? If she has any or all of the first three symptons she sounds like she has mycroplasma infection- you need a vet to give you antibiotics- if she is just gaping you can try and worm her. Let us know how she goes,
regards, David :)

no she does not have a discharge or any of the symptoms you say, but she is sneezing as well,is that desease infectious?

orry also meant to ask what wormer do i need do they need a particular wormer for chickens? sorry this is the first time ever keeping chickens

its me again!!! I have just noticed she is pecking and pulling under her tail feathers at her bottom, does this mean anything?

Hi, you need to worm her with Flubenvet- you should be able to get in in France- if she is ill i suggest you take her to the vets- they will be able to diagnose what is wrong - check her for lice/mites/etc- around her vent is the best place to look- have you a local vet? they can worm her at the same time.
Hope she is better soon.
regards, David :)

Yes, she could be 'gaping' which is what chickens can do when they have gape worm in the trachea (wind pipe).

Have a look at this photo on the desease page about Gape Worm: It's under the 'respiritory tab'

Poultry Diseases and Disorders page

Good luck and do let us know what happens... Tim.
