Hi we are new to the forum and looking forward to learning more about our feathered friends. As our Sussex star is moulting for the first time it looks like a major pillow fight in and around the run. Have I read somewhere that the extra protein needed when moulting can be supplied by cat food? Just waiting for the other two girls to start now.

Hello and welcome! :-)99

Feathers are made up of mostly protein, so yes it would be right to assume they need more protein, however as moulting is a natural process they don't really need a change in diet. Usually a hen will cease laying at this time so the energy required for egg production is diverted into growing new feathers. Cat food whilst containing high levels of protein is not really designed for chickens digestive systems. You can increase the protein content slightly by changing to a rearers or growers feed. If still laying the odd egg, some due during moulting particulary hybrids, you can ensure a slow release form of calcium is available such as quality crushed oyster shell from most feed stores or over tinternet :D
