Lovely. They look like they are both crosses with call ducks. I have a true mallard female and her bill is substantially longer than that so I think you're really lucky, they are lovely.

The Mallard female was rescued from the wild. Do you think she is a cross with a call?

I just think she has a very short bill for a wild mallard. I'll see if I can take a couple of pictures of mine. I have a mallard coloured call and a pure mallard.
Trouble is the weather is a bit wild at the moment!

I hope this works.
The first picture is of Angie. She's a mallard type call duck, notice the size of her bill. The second picture is of Molly with her boyfriend. Molly is pure mallard whilst he boyfriend is a call drake. Her bill is quite a bit longer than the calls'. Cayugas are much bigger birds and with much longer bills.

Katydid; they are gorgeous. Why does every picture I see of ducks make me smile?
I would say Karen has a bill in between Angie's and Molly's. She has brilliant blue markings on her flight feathers and is really pretty.
All I know about her is that her previous owner saw she had an infected foot as a wild bird and decided to rescue her.
I don't know if she was a duckling at that time but for a wild duck she is super friendly but is more cautious with threatening things than Jerry the most laid back, want to be everyone's friend duck!

Thank you duggat, ducks are just great birds. I live my chickens but ducks are really special, especially call ducks and I could just watch them for hours. Very therapeautic.
My guess then for Karen is that she is a mallard call duck cross although there looks more call duck than mallard her whole shape is more rounded like Angie than long like Molly. The flight feathers can be brilliant blue or brilliant green. They look such a lovely pair, will you let them have babies? they would be very interesting to see.

She has had 2 lots of babies before she came to me. She is supposed to be a very good mum. I would love to see their babies but I think my ever understanding husband might think differently though. He adores them so watch this space!

I don't know where you are, but if you're in Britain she should be laying in the next month or so. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

How did the grandchildren taste? or are they been saved to incubate?

Brilliant duggat.
She should lay about 12 eggs before sitting. She just needs plenty of bedding to make a nice deep nest to hold all the eggs.

watson, shame on you. To think I could eat a grand baby now matter how good they may taste. Thankfully my 8 year old grandson will not get to read this forum as he could be a little worried that Nana had become someone to be scared of.
Forth egg today as she was coming out of her house. Picked it up and put it with the others.
She still spends a lot of time out of their run foraging and on the pond. She dutifully put herself to bed yesterday to sit on them but has lost interest in doing that tonight.
Its all very interesting and exciting to watch them as a newbie duck owner. Just the fact that they follow me everywhere amazes me as I hadn't dared to expect that much friendliness from them.

She shouldn't be sitting until she has laid all her eggs, as I say about 12. I've found that the serious mums as they get close to the 12 will spend a bit longer on the nest each day until they reach the number they want and then they will stay on it for 28 days. She will get offa couple of times a day to eat, drink and swim. Getting wet is important as it keeps the humidity up of the eggs.

Do let me know how it's going.
Katy
