hi,

I have a trio of buff pekins but would like to no what would happen if i mixed another colour, like putting my buff cockeral to a lavender hen.

Would the result be a mix of lavender and buff, a poor version of each breed or a new colour all together?

look forward to the replys,

Ben.

Ben,

If you get an answer to this - Can you let me know?

Cheers

Crossing colours is quite complicated and you need to know the genetic make up of your birds to work out what the offspring will look like. It all depends on what colour genes both birds are carrying and the offspring will be a combination of these. The offspring will not breed true from the colours you create.

I struggle with the basics but a good introduction to general Genetics can be found on this Webpage.

Some crosses can be useful - sex linked crosses for example - A hen passes on some of her characteristics to her sons and not her daughters so if you cross genes for silver (e.g. White) and gold down (e.g. Buff), the cock from the 'gold' breed mated with a hen from a silver breed should give gold down in the female chicks and silver down (passed from the mother) in the male chicks. This is how hybrids work - you can sex the chicks at day old and only raise pullets.

Hope this helps a little!

Hi,

On that basis I should be looking at 3 hens and 2 cocks. With an unsure on the Fav. The 5 toes thing must say it's a cock (?) I feel only time will tell!

The simple answer is buff to lavender will give, if they are pure for their colour, black with possible gold in their neck but they will be impure carrying an absolute mishmash of different genes.
