Just hatched my first lot of pekin chicks. I got 11 out of 12 eggs. Just a bit worried. Some of the chicks have not got the feathered feet. Spoke to the guy who sold the eggs to me and he said they might grow later. As anyone else every had pekin chicks without the feathers on the feet.

They should have sort of fluff going down the legs. I have hatched pekins for the last four years and have never had any which have had clean legs when they have hatched. I'm not sure whether they can grow later.

We've never had any pekins hatch without the feathered feet, apart from when trying to create chocolate pekins - they came out with one featherless toe for a while!

Thanks for the help. I dont understand it myself. He insists they are pekin eggs that he sent and to be fair they all look similiar, but four have loveyly feathers on their feet and the rest have nothing at all. When I emailed and asked him he said that either the feathers would grow later or they are could be throw backs. This is the first time I have had chicks so I am not sure what is going on. I am just a bit worried what sort of chicks they are if not pekin as I read you should,nt mix pekins with other species.

Pekins all hatch with feathery feet , I am sure if they dont they will not get feathers later . When not penned for breeding all my birds run about together in the bay (including Pekins) some tiny and some pretty large--I cant see why Pekins shouldnt mix? Ros

Thats good to know that they can all go together. Just upset when I paid for pekin eggs and now I dont know what they are. But the chicks are so cute and I love them all. Thanks for your help

Agree with podstable - pekins hatch with down on their feet and legs and are fine to be kept with other hens - as long as they are integrated properly (like any other breed!)

Pekins also have no problems when crossing with other breeds- some hatch feathery and others not! (you should have seen what I hatched from polands x pekins!)They just wont be pekins that's all :) If you're looking to breed from your birds I wouldn't use the ones you have hatched with clean legs but if they are going to be pets then I'm sure they'll be gorgeous! - Pics please!! :D

I just had some hatch and their feet were fully feathered. They are so cute!

Pics Brooke please! I hatched out peeks with go faster stripes last week! thought they might all be black but only had one plain black out of 15!

iv pekins mixed in with polish silkies full sized brahmas hybreeds and a fue pekin crosses they get on fine never had a problem with them speicaly the girls they used to sit on brahmas feet to keep warm
all mine had feathered feet even the crosses

Thanks for all the advice. I dont think they can all be pekin now, but they are still all cute. Although if anyone has any ideas of which breed they are I would be interested to know! Here is a pic of some of them.

Four have got feathered feet and two have fine hair down their legs. The rest are just normal. They are so cute and I love them to bits, but just a little annoyed that I asked and paid for Pekin eggs and now I dont know what they are.

This is the best photo I can find quickly but it shows the fluff down the legs, which I have had on all my pekins I have hatched, this is actually a partridge pekin

Oh what a cute baby. Its a shame they have to grow. I have got four that have legs like that, but not the rest. Im just a little annoyed that I paid for pekin and know I dont know what I have got. Will just have to wait till the grow up and see how they turn out. But I love them whatever they are.

Most of them then are not Pekin. The only way to look at it is that it will be exciting to find out what they are when they all grow abit larger. They could be Orpington bantam chicks which are lovely. Surely the person you bought them from can tell you what breeds he keeps, although they could be a mixture.
They are beautiful little things anyway.

I agree the featherless ones look very similar to our orpington chicks. The pekins are definitely Mille Fleurs, my personal favourite!

I thought orp when I saw the clean legged chicks too :D They all look lovely and healthy and like others have said it's like a pick and mix as to what you'll end up with.
