Can anyone tell me whether the pecking order would change if, after the pecking order had been settled in a flock of 6 hens, a hen or two had been taken out and lived together separately for a few months, if they were then put back into the original flock, whether the pecking order would change or would they just slot back into their previous positions? They are in pens next to each other, but can't really see each other.

Usually there is a big punch up and the order will be sorted all over again. It's not possible to anticipate how much of a fight there will be or how long the niggles will go on but sometimes it can be surprisingly easy and they settle down quickly.

Hi Sue. The pecking order shifts with the birds condition as well. Take them away and I can gaurantee they will have a little tiff to sort out the order again. The gentlest way is to have them close (in sight. A small gap is enough) a couple of days and then introduce at night. As long as they are in good condition they might even find themselves up the order :-)17 I have found that havng a Cock around helps the transition.... he hates the hassle and stops things quite quick if it goes beyond a comb hold.

JMHO ... I'm no expert

One of the ones I want to try and introduce was 'top bird' before she was taken out. Will this make a difference?

Only in as much as she will need to re assert herself. If she is unsure or not quite on top form she might be down the ladder a bit, but in reality she will be happy as larry as soon as everyone knows their place again... on top or not. It's the nature of chooks imho... as long as everyone knows where they stand and there's no major upheaval they're happy...

again ... only IMHO :-)05
