Hi there,

I was wondering if anyone with L/F orpingtons knows the recommended healthy weight for a orpie cockerel?
My rooster is 18 months old and weighs 6.5 kg. He's free-range and very active.

Thanks :)

Hi,

I don' tknow but know a man who does.....

Having been to the High Peak show today and chatting with Some Orpington breeders, who won quite a bit, I am sure they could give you some info- they have a site "Manor Poultry".

Hi Hippy Chick!

The standard weight for an orpington LF is 10lbs -for a cock bird, so your boy at 6.5 kgs is about right, a bit heavy, but that is fine as long as he is fit and he is not eating too many treats or mixed corn. It could also be he is bred from a large strain.

Thanks guys,

Yes he is bred from a large strain. The only treats they get is a bit of grain (about 3 mugfuls between 30 birds) scattered on the ground. This is once a day given mid-afternoon, and only during the winter.

Now I know the average, I can keep an eye on him. ;)
