Hi,
A little story.....as some of you may already know we have 3 pekins- oknown as our "BIG Girls who have their own "BIG HOUSE" and our 2 "little girls" - a Sablepoot and D'Uccle in their own "small house". Even though the two houses have sat alongside each other since April - never the twain will meet! It was of course ok for the "Big girls" to perch in the little house even sometimes pushing the "little girls" out even when they were laying. The "big girls" would, under no circumstances tolerate the "little girls" crossing the ramp of the big house. Our Mama Pekin calls everyone to bed, she waits on her ramp, until the little girls have trotted in their house before she takes herself up to bed in her own house.
WELL, in our efforts to unite our flock of 5, after a very long 7 months, and prepare for the upcoming winter months, we moved the l"Big Girls" house to our large metal shed. We couldn't believe our eyes- all five girlies were cozied up in the nest box from the first night- no fighting or squabbling. This has continued all week long, and what is so lovely is that they all look so much more happy - the "little girls" have truly been accepted as part of the flock. It is difficult to remove our D'Uccle from this new house and its new arrangement as she keeps each "laying" hen company, sitting alongside them until the egg arrives. I think the sheer pleasure of being allowed to sit in the nest box has overwhelmed her.
So we have five very happy girls, in one house, with much less work for me....... The spare little house could always be used for new girlies..... really fancy some frizzled.
