Hi,

A little story.....as some of you may already know we have 3 pekins- oknown as our "BIG Girls who have their own "BIG HOUSE" and our 2 "little girls" - a Sablepoot and D'Uccle in their own "small house". Even though the two houses have sat alongside each other since April - never the twain will meet! It was of course ok for the "Big girls" to perch in the little house even sometimes pushing the "little girls" out even when they were laying. The "big girls" would, under no circumstances tolerate the "little girls" crossing the ramp of the big house. Our Mama Pekin calls everyone to bed, she waits on her ramp, until the little girls have trotted in their house before she takes herself up to bed in her own house.

WELL, in our efforts to unite our flock of 5, after a very long 7 months, and prepare for the upcoming winter months, we moved the l"Big Girls" house to our large metal shed. We couldn't believe our eyes- all five girlies were cozied up in the nest box from the first night- no fighting or squabbling. This has continued all week long, and what is so lovely is that they all look so much more happy - the "little girls" have truly been accepted as part of the flock. It is difficult to remove our D'Uccle from this new house and its new arrangement as she keeps each "laying" hen company, sitting alongside them until the egg arrives. I think the sheer pleasure of being allowed to sit in the nest box has overwhelmed her.

So we have five very happy girls, in one house, with much less work for me....... The spare little house could always be used for new girlies..... really fancy some frizzled.

That's it you lot! Just tooooo many wonderful photos tonight!!! :D :D :D
They look like real sweetie pies!

we've found that it works best if you "wrong foot" the bossiest hens..
either by moving them all into a new shed,
or outnumbering them!

your girls are lovely, I like the littley in the middle :D :D

Thankyou everyone, :-)07

All is still well. :-)08

SUE/BLUE- The Little one in the middle - our Millie Sablepoot when standing towers above all the other girlies. Think she was laying low to be accepted on that perch. Funny, how there are several perches in the house, but they now all have their place on ONE!

Your eggs look delicious, like rich conkers or choc truffles.....do they taste as good as they look?

Oh, how lovely to see them all together. I'm jealous though, you still have laying hens. My black pekin has been broody since early Sept with no sign of coming out of it, and the other went broody about 5 weeks ago, although she's out of it now there's no sign of eggs. I guess that's my lot for this year. I even had to buy some from another chicken keeper last week, and they just didn't taste the same.

Hi Dawn,

How nice to hear from you! Yes, they are laying bless them, we are now down to 1 or 2 a day-from the girls who have spent the entire summer being broody- so I reckon they are making up for lost time. The heavily moulting girls, are so miserable and confused- almost evil and havn't laid for a while.

So am making the most of baking, we had quiche and a baked cheesecake this weekend- Perish the thought of having to buy eggs!
