Hello!

Needing some advice. We bought an incubator to hatch some chicks, the problem is we have only had one chick and we're worried what to do with it. Is it best to try and get some other chicks to grow up with it,or can we get a foster mum (though I guess it would need to be broody, which none of ours are).

Poor wee thing, its two days old so I think we need to act fast - I'd love to know what others have done in this situation.

Its not ideal to rear one on its own as it really needs company, but this is pretty much the wrong time of the year to find chicks. You could try posting a wanted ad on some of the forums, just in case someone near you might have some to spare.

If not its just Hobson's Choice :? As the only other option is probably not one the chick might choose.

I've had a solitary chick from a hatch a few times.
I have handled it (daft I know) talked to it, kept it warm in a brooder box, meanwhile searching around for some week olds with which to rear it.
I did this with a solitary Silkie a few weeks back. Found some, not too far away, and now all three are growing apace!.
There is a site with chicken breeders and sellers all over the country, who always sell little ones.
If you Google chicken sellers and breeders you will find it, sorry, cannot remember what it is called. If I do remember, I will come back and put it on here.
All the best, all chicks deserve a friend.

Hello again,
the site is poultry.allotment.org.uk, hope I got it right. I sure "poultry allotment" will get the site.
All the best.
