Hi all
not been on for a bit, some of you may of read that my cochin cockerel Jerry went lame and had a trip to the vets, he was on antibiotics for a while but he didn't improve at all. I have been trying to make the decision for the last 2 weeks. my dad offered to do the deed although I know he didn't really want to. so after a lot of mind changing I decided to take him to the vets and let them put him to sleep. Took him last night :( I've been very lucky with my past pets and have never had to have anything put to sleep before and although I think I did best by him it was awfull. I let Margot out to free range today and she went straight over to see him in the rabbit hutch he had been in. she can't work out where he's gone. I have hatched a chick from them and am hoping to put this with her when its old enough. I just hope margot will be ok on her own until then :(

I'm sorry to hear about Jerry, I have a real fondness for roosters mine have been so friendly. It must be sad to see Margot on her own.

I notice you're in Norfolk, I live just south of the border with Suffolk (near Thetford) and have been looking for a chicken friendly vet, wondered if yours was in a reasonable distance from me.

hi
I go to downham market vets called the crossings for all my domestic pets. I did look for a poultry vet and norfolk farm vets was recomended. I gave them a ring and they wanted £20 just to see him and a further £30 just to put him to sleep. so I thought I'd give the crossings a try. they only charged £12 to see him as they charge a smaller fee for small animals, and after antibiotics didn't work the cost of having him put to sleep was £17.50.
Another vets near me won't even see chickens :?
I always take my pets to the crossings and have found them to be very good and now my chooks will be going there to. May be to far for you but you can have a look here. http://www.crossingsvets.co.uk
