We just had a favorelle chick hatch under one of our broody hens. The egg had just hatched, but was already detached from the chick. The baby has a red, sac about the size of a small marble attached to it's bottom...it seems healthy as it is acting no different than any of our others that we've hatched. Is this something that is normal or should we be concerned?
She just hatched about 1 hour ago. She is under the light with our other baby chicks...any suggestions?
Thank you
Brooke

That's normal and will go quickly ,just its 'belly button'! As I am nosey (!) Why are you taking them from broody hen to raise under lights? ? Ros

We have had better success rate this way, as our 2 broodies tend to get together in the same nest box and sit on the eggs and chicks. They have smothered several babies due to this...so we have been putting them under the light and they are doing great. We just let 7 bandies go be with their flock and 5 red stars also. Now we have 4 babies under the light. So glad to hear that this is normal,'as the chick is doing great! She's eating and drinking and chirping away. :) thank you Ros!

How long will it be there before it falls off? We had hatched many other chicks and they have never had this...and they also had just been born? Confused...

If its still there its probably not just a prominent umbilical stump which is what I thought it sounded like ! More likely to be the remains of yolk sac. If so these dry up and it would by now feel a bit like a thin bit of dried up leather. They fall off after several days--if thats what it is . Maybe you could Google a pic to compare ? Can you get a pic on here of it ? Ros

It is exactly what you described...are the chicks usually ok? Will it affect her laying eggs, if it is a hen? It looks like it would affect her having bowel movements...thanks
Brooke

If that's what it is it won't have any effect on guts or egg laying etc.If they are big I think chicks usually ide in first day or so.If small they should be OK. Ros
