Hi
1st time post so I am hoping I don't ask something thats already been asked
I have a small back garden measuring 24'x24'. Its grass with a path and some shrubs nothing else. It is enclosed totally by a 6ft high panel fence and gravel boards. Is this going to be suitable for keeping a couple of chickens? I will get a hen house but not with a run as I would like to allow the chickens to have free run of the garden. Would I have to shut them in at night or would the chickens take themselves of to bed? We do not get any foxes and a fox wouldn't be able to get in the garden. If I can allow them not to be shut in will they be ok in the winter having a free run of the garden or will they need shutting in? Will I end up with no grass? I don't mind some damage but I would like to keep some grass.

Sorry for the long winded questions but I would like to make sure I know exactly how to look after them. I would be grateful for any answers to my questions . Thanks in advance.

Hi Hoglet----- 6ft fence????--no problem for a fox. No foxes----they are everywhere , sorry, not trying to be a spoilsport! They will defo need shutting in house at night or very soon wont be there! Perhaps you could make a good size run with the house inside then let them free range when you are on site to keep an eye on them? Not trying to put you off, just would hate to hear you had new chooks-but not for long. ! I am sure you can manage a couple of chooks in that size plot and keep them safely--just needs some organising! I hope you enjoy them, Ros

Thank you Ros. You are certainly not a spoil sport, best to ask those in the know and get the benefit of your advice. The last thing I want to do is lose any chickens. I will look into getting a run to keep them safe. Thanks for replying.

Hello, welcome to the lovely world of chicken keeping. So far as I know there are no foxes near me, but it's wise not to take chances and shut them up every night. I started with a coop, no run and let mine free range in the garden. I soon found that a run is vital as there will be times you can't be there at nightfall or for one reason or another need to confine them.
Mine now have a nice run but spend most of their time free ranging. Hope you enjoy them - oh and you may not have quite so much grass after a while :)
