Hi All,

I have been looking at getting a chicken for some time however i live in a semi detached with a normal garden and wasnt too sure about it, then i looked into quails but while doing so i came across the Serama breed and have been trying to do more research into them.

Could anyone tell me between quails and Seramas which ones would most prefer human company? I am hoping to get a bird which i can interact with on some level and i was also keen when i saw that Seramas can live indoors in a rabbit cage.

Does anyone have any information on these birds?

Thanks

-------quail are flighty but Serama are very placid and friendly. Both are flock animals and need company of their own type. Chickens or quail are NOT suited to being a single pet. An indoor hutch would be OK for overnight /sleeping,like all living things both are 'designed' to live outside and need space and freedom. Ros

I agree with Podstable - Seramas are very small bantams but they are still chickens and need a run where they can get fresh air and more room to move around and scratch about than in a rabbit hutch. The best number to start with would be 3, so if and when one of them died you'd still have two, because no chickens (or quails) will thrive unless kept in at least a small flock with company of their own kind. Also it's difficult to introduce a single extra one once the first ones have settled down together as they are not friendly at first to newcomers to the flock and may fight. Any kind of chicken will become very tame and friendly if carefully and correctly handled, and really become like members of the family, each with her own personality, but they are not really cuddly pets and do need other chickens for their main source of company.

i really hope you get your chickens, (or quails) as it's a very rewarding hobby, and you obviously are going about it the right way by finding out what you need to know before buying any birds. That way, you can avoid a lot of expensive and distressing mistakes! Good luck, and keep coming back with the questions, we'll all do our best to help.

are the Seramas a lot like the dutch and fly in that case not great for gardens without a top. iv a dutch who would fly up on the flat roof of the house now in covered run she will jump on your shoulder and chat for ages
i have a semi my neighbours love to watch the chooks but not happy when they jump over and eat the veg garden. they can make fantastic pets
