New to Indian Runner Ducks

Yes, electric hens are very economical too using only 25 watts of power :D
Initially mine tucked themselves underneath, then when they were big enough they just used it as a climbing frame :D

Hi guys, just thought I'd give you a quick update.

The ducks are pretty happy with their new home I think, I'm putting a small pond in in the next few weeks as well.

Quite a few pics on my blog here: http://indianrunnerducks.tumblr.com/

Mission accomplished!

This morning and yesterday morning we had a egg! They are only very small compared to the ones we incubated, is this because the ducks are still young? They are only 17 weeks old, I thought they started laying at about 21 weeks?

Hi guys, long time no speak.

Bit of an update for you all!

I bought a couple of lavender runners in autumn (they were probably about 10 weeks old at the time). Anyway the drake in my original bunch was getting more and more aggressive towards me every time I fed them. When the new duckling arrived he turned into an absolute menace, he basically just tried to kill them whenever I let them in the enclosure with them.

I ended up giving him and two of my girls away to a lady I knew, he's now settled elsewhere.

So at this point it was october and the girls stopped laying, I was unsure whether it was because of the time of year or because I took their man away?!

The two lavender ones are now fully grown and one is a drake so I thought he might take over as the man of the house.
Last week the girls all started bobbing their heads up and down like they do when they are after a bit of sexy time, but the new drake wasn't interested.

A few questions, does this mean they might start laying again soon? also could I introduce another drake or would this upset things?

I currently have one drake and four girls.

Cheers :)

I think you could be right there!

I was just worried my drake might be a bit inferior if you know what I mean haha!

I really want to get one more duck so perhaps it'll be best to get a female then.

I'll let you know what happens :)

I think my ducks may have registered on this forum and started reading my posts, two eggs this morning!

:)

Hi guys! I'm having a bit of a (probably unnecessary) panic! I have some hens and a drake call duck and they all live happily in a beautiful coop and enclosed run (with a paddling pool for Huey the duck) We decided to give hatching some runner ducks a go as I've always wanted runners and we thought Huey would like some duck buddies.

It appears that only one of the eggs is going to hatch - started today. (I'm 99.9% sure the others are dead) I'm now panicking as to how this little lonely runner duck is going to cope? We were intending on getting a separate house to go in the run for the ducks as they wouldn't all fit in the current coop and assumed that over time Huey would migrate to the duck side rather than living with the chooks. But as only one duck is hatching its kind of scuppered our plans!

Do you think he/she will be ok with Huey and his girls? He will be in the brooder for a while, could I get other ducklings to go in with him? I say him but I'm hoping its female as I'm aware I could have a problem with 2 males??

if all else fails he can live with us and the dog!

Any advice would be gratefully received

Hi guys, I've not been on here for a while but my ducks have been ticking along nicely until last week.

I left some eggs in the duck house and they sort of went unnoticed for a week.

I went to collect them and they were warm! It looks as though I have 2 girls sat on them.

Now the eggs have been added to so there is now quite a lot (about 15)

Is it normal to have two girls sat on one big pile of eggs?

I'd like the girls to have a go at hatching their own so do I just leave them to it?

Should I prepare another special area for them for when they hatch (if them hatch)

HELP PLEASE!! :D :D :D
