hi, just joined hope to pick all your brains. iv,e been keeping chickens for 2 years and started breeding 1 year ago.just hatched 17 from incubator all doing well. :D could anyone tell me if my chicks are sex linked. i have 3 white sussex cocks running with various hens, 2 warrens, 4 black rocks, 6 rir, 2 ex leghorns, 1 barred plmouth, 1 buff orp.thanks
 
Hello and welcome, no, your chicks will not be sex linked- you need a "gold" cock to "silver hens"- they best sex linked cross is RIR cock to Light sussex hens-the pullets are brown the cocks white with brown on them. Are your cockerels White sussex or Light sussex? i.e pure white or black and white?

hi, david all my cocks are black and white, the 17 chicks ive just hatched are all different, obviously from the different hens. 6 black with white chests, 3 ginger, and 8 yellow. the main thing i was wondering when i put the same eggs under a broody last year i got 3 hens which looked like the light sussex as they grew, i dont have any light sussex hens and they all turned out to be cocks. could i get a pullett from this batch what looks like a light sussex or will all the light sussex looking chicks be cocks, cheers ,mick

Hi and welcome, sorry im not great on genetics questions
but according to the chicken calculator http://kippenjungle.nl/kruising.html both your warrens and your RIRs should create sex linked offspring but the girls would look mostly like the Light sussex
 
thankyou girlracer, i,ve been asking chicken people this question for ages and never seem to get a definitive answer, i assume from who i have spoke to there is a lot of pretention about. maybe chicken farmers dont like people like me coming in and messing up the gene pool. i do fully intend to pen and breed certain types of chicken when i decide which ones. as for the ones i have already bred i,ve got some lovely looking birds and i,m only using them for eggs. kind regards mick.
