Hi just joined the forum and have little experience in keeping chickens. I have recently incubated some hen eggs and had a 10 out of 10 hatch rate :D we have 3 cockerals and 7 hens. we have been lead to belive that when you purchase hens they have normally had all there vacinations. We are concerned as we dont know what vaccinations we should be giving our chicks. We are mainly concerned about the samonella vaccine and does anyone know where we can purchase it or is it really nessasery? :? please help asap

Often small hobby poultry keepers don't vaccinate their stock. Its usually the larger/commercial breeders do this.

I never vaccinate mine and have had no problems. I just don't give runny yolk cooked eggs from my chooks to my young son. And don't make mayo etc with them. I however eat soft boiled and runny yolk fried/poached eggs.

I've never bought birds from a small scale breeder and found they have vaccinated their stock.

As I understand it cost wise alone its not viable for small scale poultry keeping.

Same here. I don't vaccinate but do keep a closed flock - I don't buy in birds that could bring in problems. I do hatch eggs from outside from time to time but there is less risk doing this and generally if you have healthy chicks, it's months before they mix with the rest of the flock and any problems should show up before then.
