Hi all,

Just started keeping some chickens for the first time. We purchased three hybrid growers, all about 16 weeks old, they are not laying yet. They have settled into their coop but are still a bit skitish. We've had then for 3 days and feed them on Growers Mash and have put some mixed grit in their run. Should we add a tonic or vitamin supplement to the feed and/or water? If so what type of tonic? I've heard if they get stressed for too long they may get ill.

We would be gratefull for any help or advice.

Hi, and welcome to the forum :) they will settle down, once they are used to their new home and keepers :) Try to be patient and calm around them- they should start laying in a few weeks time- once settled down. You will need to put them onto layers meal/pellets once they are nearing laying. As for tonics- take your pick- there are lots to choose from- poultry spice, poultry tonic, acv, etc- i don't use any regularly but you can try any you wish- your local feed merchant should have a good range.Enjoy your new birds :)
regards, David :)

Free range is also the best tonic they can ever have ;) I rarely give tonic, only during winter if the ground is frozen or the birds are kept in / moved etc.

ACV is well worth giving regularly though - one week per month or there abouts as it has many minerals and is good in the gut to help reduce worm numbers.

Be patient with the eggs - they should start to lay around 20 - 24 weeks of age but don't fret if they don't. The more they grow now, the larger your eggs will be when they do come into lay...

They won't get stressed if you don't move them again. Give them routine and they will soon adapt to their new home.

Good luck and ohh! Welcome to the forum... thanks for joining us :D

Might give ACV a try just for a week or so untl they are completely settled . Thanks for the advice, reading through the posts on this forum there are certainly some knowledgeable people around. So hope you guys don't mind if I ask some other 'newbie' type questions once in a while.
