Feeding up this morning and looked around to find a Muscovy Duck with five newly hatched ducklings. Put them in a pen as the mother doesn't seem very sensible. Two remaining eggs put in the incubator just in case ! Meant to throw the eggs away before she had a chance to get too settled on them.

Amazing, isn't it, how difficult it can be to get ducks to sit when you want them to, at a sensible time of year, and then, in mid- winter, one does something like that!

Muscovies are the Silkies of the duck world and will take every opportunity to go broody, especially when you don't particularly want them to. Most are sensible and very protective mothers too. There is another sitting at the bottom of the hay stack with no chance to get to her.

Congratulations Chuck, what a lovely suprise! :D
My muscovy ducks are exploring hedges and one had made a nest in a straw bale..so must keep an eye out for hidden eggs! :D
