Just come back from a few days near Rhayader in Wales. We didn't manage to see the Red Kite feeding (bad timing) but were very impressed by the local nesting facilities!

They had a huge bell style food hopper (huge!) Don't know how full it was but clearly supplemented that mostly by foraging over half an acre (no half a hectare) at least. Mine would defiantly go on strike with that information! The cockerel would have been magnificent if he hadn't been roughed up by several holidaying dogs - Linden is moulting at the moment but this king of the flock needed a bit more tail bless him. Oh but the freedom!

One of my growers found its own place to roost last night.

 :D

All this flying about is a new one on me, I don't think I ever saw an orpington go higher than scrambling over an electric netting fence, and once one sat on a bench!

My 5 are still roosting on the high "leghorn' perch at night. It's well under the cover of the roof and has been very good in the hot weather, but I'm interested to see what happens when it gets really windy and wet. I can understand the two leghorns liking it, and even the little columbine who is part-leghorn I expect, but the other two are different sorts of Marans crosses and quite heavy by comparison. One of the leghorns is a very bossy top hen so I expect that, when she says "Come on girls, you can do it!' they all make the effort.
At least I don't have to bend down, remove the door and and get inside the coop to clean it up, it all falls in a neat line underneath.
Well, it would be neater if they all faced the same way overnight.
