Hi I have bought a new chicken coop and it has 3 nesting boxes attached to the side wall although none of my hens are using them. They are smaller than their original nest should I make them bigger or is there anything I should do to encourage them to lay in these boxes? Many thanks Sheryl

Hi, are they big enough for your hens to get into ? if a little small can you not alter them to make them a little bigger? i.e. take out one partition to make two bigger ones? try leaving a false egg or two in them as well, to encourage them to use them.
regards, David :)

I'd also try to leave them locked in their coop until they have laid their eggs. I was leaving mine until mid-morning and my neighbour would come and let them out (as I was at work). I found that doing this, and leaving a couple of fake eggs in the nest worked for my hens. :)

Hi Shez

You could also try putting some curtains on the boxes.
It worked wonders with mine, Just cut some plastic sheeting or bags into strips (like a tasseld skirt) and staple them over the box entry.
Not only does it make them more appealing, it also protects the hens inside from being pecked in atender spot whilst laying as they invariable have their vent facing the door.

cheers

steve
