hi i was wondering if anyone on here could give me some advice please on my silver appleyard duck limping.
she has always had a limp, i kept her on crumb to long when she hatched and she also had angel wing which i corrected with tape.
but yesterday i noticed that she didn't walk at all and i had to put her on the pond and take her off, she has the leg tucked up in her feathers all the time. is there anything that i could give her to help her, she is really a sweet duck, the others that hatched with her are fine, they have all been wormed on flubenvet, she is coming up to 2 years old, so not old.
any advice welcomed.

Hi Rita
I would think that it is time to get a veterinary opinion on her condition as it is long term and could be a number of things. It would be careless for someone to suggest what you should do until you know exactly what you are dealing with.
Good luck with her and could you keep us posted?

I had a runner duck who started to limp-his was an acute condition, not chronic in the case of your duck, but we had 2 visits to the vet and had steroid injections as the foot was inflamed. I had to bathe his foot in salt water for about a week and he is now fine.

the foot and leg is not swollen at all, i think it will have to be the vets and see what they think.
i will let you know the outcome.

Good luck and I hope she is ok.. so many things can cause leg issues, it is a mine field! Sometimes if they have one bad leg, they go off the other due to too much pressure, ducks have quite weak legs :(

well yesterday and today i gave my duck some cod liver oil and i noticed she was using her leg to swim with, my hubby said that if it does not get better soon she will have to be pts as it's not fair on her.
but i have been watching her and she did walk a little today, so hopefully she will start to recover, if she doesn't then i will call the vet out and see what he suggest is the best thing for her. She has lost a little bit of weight, her appetite is not to good although she did eat some pasta and a few meal worms, i put some lettuce and tomatoes on the pond for her and she eat that, she seems to eat better on the pond then on land. i suppose she is not weight bearing on the pond so it is easier for her, lets hope she starts to get better each day from now on.

Could you not take her to the vet? It could be something treatable. Without sounding rude, it is unlikely that the cod liver oil has made a change. Something is going on there that needs looking at.

While I know nothing about ducks I do know that cod liver oil works wonders for joints - and the medical profession have no idea why. Even so if it were me I'd try and get her to the vets.

It would be a good idea to search for a poultry friendly vet, or a farm vet for a consultation. There are a couple of fairly common culprits associated with the symptoms you have described, such as worms, infection (dry) and injury. A vet however will be able to identify the most likely cause.
Generally treatment will be rest, anti-inflammatory and usually a long course of anti-biotics. These need not be expensive but recovery can take up to 6 weeks and longer.

thank you for all your response, no i wont get her pts unless the vets say otherwise, even though she has been slightly better i think i will ring the vets and see what they suggest is the next course of action is best for her.
she was my first hatch duckling so is very special to me.
my vets are dogs and cats so i need to find a farmers vets who will have a little bit more knowledge on ducks.
she was born with a bad leg and has always had a limp but now it is worse then normal.
i will let you all know the outcome.

I notice Rita that you are in Gloucester, there is a good vets at Quedgeley...I can't remember the name of them so you might have to ring around. They have an excellent farm vet based there.

thank you foxy, i found another down on the A38 i went there when my chickens had mites and i couldn't get rid of the horrible things, they gave me some drops to put on their necks like you would put on dog and cats for flea's, i had forgotten about them.
At the moment she is back to her normal self with just a slight limp i am still giving her cod liver oil and omega 3, but i am keeping a close eye on her if she goes back i will get her in to see them. I took in and rescued a uromastyx lizard and my vets told me to go and find a vet who are trained in dealing with lizards and i found one in Dursley the lady who looked at my uro actually kept them herself, it's worth shopping around for the right vet for the right animals.
