I recently bought a 9 week old chicken after a few days realised her outer toe nail on each foot was missing. I posted a picture to retford poultry vet who thought they had been removed deliberately. i phoned the wernlas collection where i bought her from for 22 pounds and they said they would replace her . i have had herfor a week now and she has settled in with another wernlas olive i got at the same time.i have them both eating out of my hand and love them to bits i would not consider giving her up now. i just want to know why her nails were removed in the first place. it seems a very cruel thing to do . has any one else had this happen?

Hello and welcome, :) sometimes birds lose nails due to accidents- i have two old hens with one nail missing each- they are fine- no problems- i don't think the nails would have been removed on purpose- most likely an accident- and it will not affect the bird- it could also have been inherited- it could have been born like that.
regards, David :)
