One of our cream legbars has been sneezing since we got her. We've tried respite, herban and after a trip to the vet some baytril. No avail she kept sneezing. On the second trip to the vet, she said probably the chicken had some permanent damage and would always sneeze :-)06 . Florence (the poorly chicken, not the vet) despite a very red face and sneezing seemed very alert and didn't have any mucus around the nose so the vet didn't seem to worried. I asked if there was anything else I could do and was given some Tylan to inject. I followed the instructions from the vet about alternating the injections so they weren't always in the same place and always into the muscle. This morning she didn't want to come out of the house and after I gave her the injection she looked very unhappy. I was cleaning out their house and she started to walk towards me, she wobbled, fell down gasping for breath and then started to have some sort of fit. it was all over fairly quickly, by the time I got over to her she was dead.

I'm so upset, I'm worried I killed her by injecting her in the wrong place. Poor wee thing, she had yet to lay an egg.

Sorry to post such a story, I'm still in a bit of shock I think. :(

Love Charliex

Poor you - its horrible when something you are caring for dies, but it sounds as though you did everything you could for her. From what you say she wasn't well when she arrived with you, so I wouldn't blame yourself at all.

So sorry
Sue

Aw---Sorry Charlie you must be very upset. You will NOT have killed her by the injection--you wouldnt have been able to put it anywhere where it would have harmed her --even if you had managed to somehow ,the ABs would not have have killed her--so DO NOT worry about that! The trouble with chickens is some just seem destined to not make it Im afraid. :( Ros

ahhhhh poor you charlie am sending you a hug.
once a bird is ill it can be one tough job getting it better again sometimes they hide the spytoms until its to late i have had that and its not nice you did the best you could shes resting in chooky heaven now with all her friends .

Sorry Charlie about your chicken, We had a hybrid chicken which died really quickly.one day she was fine, the next she was gasping for breath and despite bringing her in overnight the next day she was dead. Just get comfort from the fact that you gave her a good life while she was alive and she didn't suffer.

Sorry to hear about your hen, echo everyones comments you did everything possible for her, sounds like she may have been harbouring an illness for some time. :-)06

i have one thats not good at the mo so i am dreading the morning i've done what i can for her as well as snugg her down in a deep warm bed of straw as i really dont think this cold will help her but i dont hold out much hope , i have learned in the past year or so that no matter what you do its just not always enough to get them though what ever it is thats wrong hopfully she will pull though as she could be starting a moult like the other white legbars and its just knocking her for 6{ this will be her first proper moult } but i have had it before that when they just dont want to get out the nest box an the tail is down then you know its not good :( but i got everything crossed for her .

have to say i dont think i have ever known any other forums { pet ones } where the people really come together to try an help a fellow pet owner when a pet is ill .

So sorry Charlie :( ,I've seen 2 of mine die in a similar fashion, and 1 died in my hands. It is a shock and upsetting. You did everything you could for her, and, she knows you loved her and cared for her.I'm 110% certain that you didn't kill her by giving her a tylan injection so get rid of that idea.

How horrible for you. Don't blame yourself, sometimes these things just happen

So sorry Charlie, had the same too, unfortunately one of those things & Im sure that it wasnt anything to do with the jab/ Please dont worry.
