So my welsummers are 4 weeks old today. It was very obvious which were boys and which were girls, the boys had huge red combs compared to the girls, their chest feathers were black and well, their demeanor and behaviour was different. I ended up with 4 boys and 2 girls.
There is no way I could cull them myself, I would be too afraid of not doing it properly and causing the animal unnecessary distress and pain, and so had arranged with my vet that he would do it for me.
I decided today was the day, the boys have been getting more aggressive with each other, the children break up from school soon, and I'm off work. so I made the call to the vet.... to be told that 2 of the nurses have stables and each have a few hens and wanted to adopt them, and they also know other people who would also be interested.
So all four of my boys have been rehomed. I'm quite confident that they wont have sinister intentions as this was the vet who warned me against advertising due to them being used for cock fighting.
So a great big sigh of relief (and a few tears too)!
