Hi everyone, I'm abit worried about one of my Wyandotte bantams. She is about 2 years old and recently gone broody :-)07 When we lift her out to get food etc she cannot seem to walk properly. She keeps on lifting both her legs one by one and shaking them. When walking she is very hesitant and again lifts her legs up quite high. Any ideas please as it is not normal for her to do this. Apart from this she has good colour and is eating, toileting fine.
Thanks, Claire. :-)09

This spring one of my broodies did the same. She has raised loads of chick with no problems but last time she was sitting she seemed to be very stiff/lame every time she got off tHe nest.Istarted lifting her off several times a day and chasing her about to get her moving-much to her disgust! After hatching she took a week or so to recover and I was very concerned about her falling onto chicks. She got going again once the chicks started to tear about.I can only assume its due to pressure on a nerve (as when you sleep on your arm) or general joint damage/stiffness --all was well in the end but I think it would be unfair on her to let her sit again.Ros

Hi Ros, I did think it could be down to stiffness because she is sitting so long. The thing is I don't even want her to be broody and we remove any eggs that are under her. Maybe I should lock her out the house but I don't like to do that in this damp weather.

Sorry-I didn't realise that she's not on eggs! I guess if you don't want her broody AND she's suffering for it then I would shut her out or soMehow stop her.Are you sure she is broody--just wondered if it could be the other way round--could she actually be sitting all the time BECAUSE she's got a bad leg?--just a thought.Ros

She is definitely broody as are a few of the Pekins. I don't think she has hurt her leg as it seems to be affecting both. Her legs look normal by the way. It is a all rather weird..... :-)05
