One of our Muscovy ducks recently managed to successfully become a mum for the first time. We had hoped to get a couple of new ducks, but out of eight eggs only three ducklings made it past week 1. Unfortunately all three seem to be drakelets (they are 4weeks old now and there is nothing dainty about them), so now we are weighing up our options. I've been trying to read up on this, but it's hard to find Muscovy specific info.

If we keep them, when would we have to separate them from the others? Would they be happy as a bachelor group if there are ducks nearby?

If we decide to dispatch them for the pot, what is the best age (I've seen 3-5 months)? And for how long do you need to hang Muscovies?

Cheers!

Hiya Sara,

sadly I am no expert on muskys, but I do know that some domestics drakes if raised together will get on very well indeed as a bachelor flock. I would suggest that you wait and see how they get along and address any issues as and when they arise.
I don't know anything about prepping them for the pot as I only rescue, but someone may be able to help you on here. Be prepared for the odd touchy response!

The farm we got them from had several drakes, but of course they had many more ducks (and various other breeds) to "dilute" the males. The also had much more land for the birds to spread out on and thereby avoid bullies. We don't have that much space, and although I could block the tunnel between our two runs, they would still be in close proximity of each other.

No rush to decide yet though, I guess...
