Moulting

A few days ago I noticed that one of our Warrens, had moulted (to excess).

She had almost no clothes on at all, she was oven ready!

She was also walking in a very strange way. Sort of exaggerated cat walk model. Putting one foot not just infront of the other but putting the left foot an inch to the right of the right foot and the right foot ...etc. with her knees bent.

So strange was this look and walk, I suspected a brain infection or some other illness.

Today she looks much better, has grown a few feathers and is walking normally.

Has anyone seen this sort of thing before?

Hi Ian,

Yes I have seen a few almost ready for the pot! If she still looks a mess and you get a minute, I'm trying to get a photo of an 'oven ready' moulting chook for the thumbnail on our 'moulting chickens' article...

It can (apparently) be quite painful for chooks to have pin feathers growing - which is why they hate being handled when they have these - so my only guess is it was making her walk a bit funny...

Or,she found a bottle/can of alcohol............. .

Sorry no photo. I am always amazed at how quickly they feather up after such a dramatic moult.
