today i had a very soft shelled egg laided and they was quite a bit of blood in it and i have a hen whos pretty miserable at the mo as she is moulting could it possiably be her thats laid the soft shell and do i need to worry about the blood in the egg ?? i havent had blood in eggs before well not in a soft shelled ones an not in that amount i've had little specks at times but thats all .

Sounds like an internal rupture, maybe excerbated by the soft egg, they usually are in the system for a while not passed normally like hard shelled ones, don't think there is much you can do Looby, I know the diet etc will be spot on, just keep an eye out for any other symptoms, prolapse, etc...

thanks foxy , i have all my girls back on layers mash as the ex batts really perfered that to the pellets and all going well the birds will come together this weekend as one main group so its just easier to use mash for all of them although the bit of wastage is annoying so they may just end up back on pellets wether they like it or not as theres less wastage

she is moulting badly though so it would not surprise me if she goes down hill they have the acv and garlic etc so i am doing all i can for them and worming is due next week ready for the winter months .
forgot to add this egg wasnt in the nest boxes in was on the second level of the wendy house in alll the poo { dont clean out tell late afternoon } so i find it kinda weird it was up there so it must of happened during the night or very early this morning but then again it looked pretty fresh .

Hi, they will sometimes lay soft and or bloody eggs- normally overnight which is why you normally find them under the perches- in my experience the hens are not normally ill and usually go back to normal laying.
regards, David :)

i wish i knew what bird it was but that will never happen  it is making me wander wether its from the one thats a little down in the dumps with her moulting there was nothing this morning although i did have yolk on top of the medi box that sits on second floor of the house right in the corner { dont worry they cant get in it also its now been removed for a good clean } not sure if that was from another dodgy egg or not but at least 6 of my girls are getting older now so i got to expect this sort of thing .

Possibly Looby, difficult to tell. If she is going through a hard moult, supplement their feed with Poultry Spice and a teaspoon of codliver oil mixed into feed twice a week.

i need to get some more spice tomorw or saturday i thought i had some but i must have used it all and forgot to replace it at the mo they are having acv and i think the ex batts quite like it  they cant stop drinking the water when i add it hehehehe wander if it can make birds drunk ??

windfall apples can have an effect  how old are your ex-batts? its possible your hen is 'spent'. They only lay a certain amount of eggs in a lifetime & hybrids etc are 'designed' to lay as many eggs in the first year or so. Pure breeds tend to lay less frequently but for a lot longer.

some of the older girls would be coming up to about 4 now maybe i dont really know how old they were when i got them .
