Our Indian Runner mother duck hatched 22 ducklings on Monday. We live in France and although there is a duck house on the island, we do have to be wary of preditors, particularly birds of prey. However, the mother duck has been making greater efforts to drown the one and only black duckling. Probably because she thinks there is something wrong with it ! Should I try to rescue it and foster it til it is older or let nature take its course ? If I foster it, how long might this have to be for ?
After about 2 minutes and 40 secs of this video you can see what I mean this little chap is up against, although today she has been having a more murderous intent about the drowning.
