Miracle Chick

This is an amazing miracle,i'm finding it hard to believe, despite it happening to me,in my bedroom.
Most of my bantams and hatching eggs that I buy,I get from Sue(Victoria's Poultry)mod on this forum. Her birds are amazing, very tame, healthy and always beautifull.Eggs I've had from Sue,are brilliant,it is very rare to recieve an infertile egg.
Well,I had a gold laced orpington bantam egg,due to hatch on the 28/11,it started pipping, and, this morning stated to chip it's way out of the shell. All of my incubators are in my bedroom,as they are un-disturbed there.I had my usual chores to do,so left Glob(gold laced orp bant)to get on with it.Was off to my mum's for tea,and when I checked before i left at 4pm,the chick still wasn't out,and all was quiet.I wrongly assumed it was having a wee rest.
When I got home at 7.45pm,I went upstairs to see if Glob had hatched.Well,Glob still hadn't hatched, and didn't seem to have made any headway in getting itself out of the shell. Was still only a small hole, and, was still quiet.I opened my incubator, and picked the egg up.
My lovely Glob egg was stone cold, chilly to the touch.Frantically,I carefully opened the egg, having to tear the inner membrane which was rubbery. The poor little chick was cold, lifeless, limp and seemed to be dead.It was still wet where it hadn't dried out,it's eyes were open but looked dull,no spark of life.
I keep a roll of kitchen towel/paper in my bedroom,so I tore a piece of,and desperately wrapped the chick inside it and started rubbing gently.Hoping to get it's blood circulating and for it to breathe and live.
No joy,Glob was stone cold and lifeless :( .
For some reason,I just placed the limp, damp body back in the incubator and went downstairs.Meaning to dispose of the little body later.
Well,by the time I came up to go to bed,it was the early hours of the morning, about 2.30am.I walked despondantly into my bedroom, knowing I had Glob to dispose of,turn the incubator off etc. When,to my utter surprise and amazement,I could hear Glob cheeping :o :D .I opened the incubator, lifted out the kitchen towel which Glob was still enclosed in and unwrapped Glob, alive and well.
At this moment in time,Glob is cheeping away as I type this.I'm over the moon./color]

Lovely news Lydia- What a lucky Glob :-)08

I had a similar experience this year with a poland chick that was stone cold and not appearing to be breathing as a broody had pushed it way. I held it, warmed it, no sign of life then for some reason I put it under another broody rather than disposing of the body. After feeding the others I went to dispose of the "body" and when I picked it up one little eye started to open- I took it home and popped it under a lamp and within about 6 hours it was fine :D

Always nice to hear a happy ending :-)17

:D :D :D :D me jealous i want to hatch chicks in my bedroom hehehe but i would never sleep . sooooooooooooooo glad the chick survived :-)17 :-)17 :-)17 can we have piccys please

What great news!!!! Looking forward to seeing pics of lucky Glob :)

Glob was doing really well.....sitting on my knee for a fuss, eating and drinking well.She/he was sharing a brooder with some silkie chicks, this morning when I opened the brooder, the silkie chicks had sat on Glob and squashed her/him flat :( .
Poor little thing had a week of warmth, love, care and food.Wish it could have been a lot longer........

As to my bedroom, there are 4 incubators(only 1 in use at the mo)1 4ft tropical fish tank,2 gerbilariums and a brooder.......it's a bit crowded.I certainly don't encourage my bfd to stay over night,he moans about the fish tank, wont have the light on,moans about the incy's,brooder and my lovely little gerbils. So he's a gog (grumpy old git)for those who don't know what a gog is......although we all know at least 1 :D .

I was enjoying reading your story until I got to this end bit. So sorry to hear your little chick is dead :( especially as it survived against all odds.

I know exactly what you mean, when I found her dead with 3 silkie chicks sitting on her as well as being upset by her death,I wished I hadn't post this story about her hatching ordeal.
I do wish that chicks wouldn't huddle together in a heap,I'd like to provide all chicks that I hatch with a little chicken suit armour. So they can't squish each other.
Unfortunately I've had other chicks squished, and will no doubt have more squished.Roll on the spring and my hens can all brood the chicks.

Hi Lydia, Although it was upsetting I (as a novice poultry keeper), can learn from this. Unfortunately, in the real world, these things do happen - its a shame it had to happen to little glob. I have only raised one brood of chicks and that was using a broody hen so she took all the responsibility!

Sorry to hear about Glob, have had this happen myself but this was under a broody :(
