Our girls are now 16 weeks old, looking fantastic and are more fun for the whole family than we could ever have imagined.
I'd appreciate some advice as to when we gradually change them over to layers food ? They are currently enjoying pellets. I've read several views/experiences as to whether or not to feed pellets or mash ? I've also been told that mash will keep them 'busy'. We allow them to roam in the garden for most of the day and they have greens in the run, we also give them a little mixed corn in the evening.

A little advice/info would be greatly appreciated.

i use a mix of both, they eat the pellet first and munch on the mash later, if i had to choose one or the other, i'd go for pellets

HI,

I have found that with the pellets if they drop them onto the floor when they feed that later they will see them and hoover the dropped up ones to. Were as with my young stock which are still on chick crumb they spill it and don't seam to realise it is there and end up never being eaten which was what I found the older hens were like too.

Hope that helps,

Greenhen

I've used both and they used to get picky with the mash and quite a bit was wasted. It is also a case of what they are used to - it takes time to change them from pellets to mash. Pellets are very convenient.

I keep a bag of mash that I use mixed with kitchen scraps. I don't feed many scraps but they do enjoy a nice warm mash on a cold winters day.

Thank you to you all for your advice and experiences. We too were concerned about the possible waste with the mash so I'm off to get them some pellets.

This forum is better than a library full of books on chickens !! :D :D

Thank you again.

I found that warm mash works better in the winter months, to keep the birds warm inside and pellets in the summer months
