Well yesterday around 0800 I heard cheeping and saw the first chip, took forever to chip the shell away and hatched around 8pm last night, another had hatched during the night when I looked in at 0600 this morning, there are two more with chip holes and two more appear to be rocking, so hopefully a 50% hatch from the original 12. Am I overly worrying about the time scale? they seem to be randomly making their way into our world... still watching...

here are a couple of pics edited in sepia as the red light just makes for awful pictures.

They can hatch over a period of 24 hours sometimes so all within normal limits. The early hatched ones will encourage the later ones with their cheeping. You don't say whether it's incubator or broody.

don't overly worry about the timing - our first hatched Friday (early) and there are still some rocking not yet chipping...

your chicks are just lovely, I love Marans :)

Incubator is King Suro 20, and we now have four with two still chipping away and I so want to help them get free... going well so far I think there may yet be another one, still watching...

I had 1 pip on day 22 at about 9am and it hatched 3pm another piped at 4pm and hatched 11pm but the one that piped between these two(about 1pm) didn`t hatch till 2pm the next day, they seem to come when ever they feel its time, i was convinced it wouldn`t hatch as it had only made a tiny hole and in just less than 24 hours it had made no progress at all then all of a sudden in the space of 10 mins it just popped out, amazing!! Good luck

Well only four have made it through unfortunately the one egg that took 36 hours to finally hatch must have been very weak and was flat on the floor the next day and one never managed to break free from its shell, I so wanted to help it but didn't want to interfere and now feel bad that I didn't do more to help, still I guess next time I shall be a bit wiser... I now have one that seems to have sticky poo around its vent, I cleaned her up a bit this morning by softening up with lukewarm water and hopefully it will stay that way, is there a proper way of cleaning chicks bottoms?

Lovely chicks Inspector! -- Sticky bottoms-- I just use a piece of gauze soaked in warm water , let it soak in/soften then gently ease off . If you try to remove while dry you just pull off a clump of down , they get a swollen red area and it will hurt. ! Ros

The chick with the botty problem seems fine tonight Ros , they are all doing fine... fingers crossed
