One of my geese has a swollen lump under his jaw, any ideas?

I'm sorry I don't have any idea what that could be.

Is it hard or soft? Could he have injured it on something?

Thanks for replying Tim {are you the wise one, as its usualy you thats replys to people ;) } i will try to catch it, easily said than done, my geese live out all the time, and when you try to grab one they jump in the mill pool, {NO im not jumping in after them :lol: }

Wise - umm no definately not

I'll be seeing some really wise people next weekend though at the Hanover show so I will ask them - but ideally could do with some more info - hard or soft and where exactly it's situated.

The best thing of all would be a photo if you can get one?? (You can get waterproof cameras these days that work in the middle of a mill pool  )

Well i managed to catch the goose, what a nasty thing he was i didnt realise how nasty their becks are, any way the lump was compacked grass under the gooses tongue, i had to push the lump to get the grass out, any idea why the grass was their, because it might happen again, OH WISE ONE :D

I bet a little just got trapped under the tonge and then caught hold of more, causing it to build up. The movement of the tongue probably kept moving it down and slowly made the lump.

I will ask my waterfowl friends this weekend as I'm not so wise with Geese

I know long grass at this time of year with chickens can cause an impacted crop / a blockage in the crop- the sort I'm talking about isn't green lush lawn type of grass but the meadow type that has gone to seed, turned brown and is harder to break.

I'm glad you found it and sorry you got pecked!

I asked a Belgian poultry vet (at the Hannover show). He said that this is quite common. He also said that the tounge can often get stuck in the dip that it leaves and if it does it will need stitching otherwise the bird will starve itself to death, not able to eat.

Best to keep an eye ;)

Yes - I have geese and although - touch wood- it hasn't happened to mine i did read that this can happen and you need to get is stitched - one person recommended stapling it ! I would imagine they are special staples like they use on humans in hospital. If you don't - now that it has stretched the area -it is likely to happen again and - yes - the tongue can slip into it.

Thanks for finging out Tim, {did you have a big LONG list of questions to ask your in the know friends ;) } The lump is back again filled up with food, does the tonge get stuck when their isnt any food in the pouch ? What would happen if i just left the food in the pouch ?

P.S forgot to mention what needs stitching ? The grove in the jowl? or the tonge ? :? :? Im a have a go girl so i will give what ever needs doing a go.

I have read about this since first hearing about it and spoken to 2 vets about it. What can apparently happen is the food can get trapped and go bad / get infected in the mouth but also, when there is a hollow, the tongue can drop = then it's called a dropped tounge.

It's most common with Toulouse Geese.

From what I understood (they are of course talking in a foreign language), it's the jaw that needs stitching - It sounds like your goose may need a trip to the vet to see if they can stitch it and stop the build up of food by stitching.

Your best bet is a poultry vet who has done this before... there's a poultry vets list on the poultrykeeper website and hopefully you are reasonably near to one of these.

If it were me, I would ring before and have a chat to make sure they know what you're talking about before going for consultation.

Hope this helps...

THANKS for finding that out for me Tim, I will give the vets a call.
