Today I found what I can only describe as a small chunk of chicken flesh with a couple of smaller pieces with it in a brood box near to an egg (although maybe no connection). There was no blood and it only smelled of "chicken meat" (I haven't cut it up!). None of the chickens (all between 3 - 5+years) show any signs of ill health as yet and nothing to say which of my girls produced it (inspected vents). Have looked on forums and some folk say they shed intestines/ovaries/intestinal linings with bits of egg etc......Can anyone shed any further light? Thanks

hi Henrietta, yes I can understand it must have been a bit alarming! but don't worry - although its not an everyday occurrence it's quite normal and in nearly all cases it is not harmful to the hen's health. Probably more likely in your flock as all your girls are sort of middle aged in hen terms.
It's called a lash, and you might like to follow up this link http://poultrykeeperforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=9270&p=55744&hilit=lash#p55744 and some of the embedded links in the posts within it, for more details. Do let us know what you think that's what it is, once you've read the links.

Thank you very much Marigold. Yes I think you are right. I did cut open the offending lump and found layers and white inside.......so yes, a lash egg. Have been keeping my eye on all of them (still don't know who did it but one of the girls has started crowing....so suspect she is over her egg laying days). Reassuring - much appreciated. Henrietta
