Loss of Balance

Hello, i hope someone can give me some advice

We have two 7 year old Embden geese.

The geese free range around our 30 acre property (Tasmania/Australia) and graze with our sheep and pet horse. About 5 days ago "Gwendoline" (who was sold to us as a female) went missing. We searched the property but could not find her. Today she came home, however, she seems quite ill like she is unbalanced and cant stand very well or walk more than a couple of steps before she loses her balance. When attempting to stand she rocks back. She was quite hungry and thirsty, I have locked her up in a small pen to observe her for the next few days (much to her mate's (Gandolf) dissatisfaction). The reason why i say she was sold to us a female is that in the last 7 years we have never found any eggs or signs of the two mating which makes us think we have two males instead of a pair. We have checked her legs but they seem fine, I am going to worm her (with panacur) but if anyone can give us any advice of what her problem may be, what may cause this, or what treatment we should give her I would be very grateful.

Hello, yes, i would definately worm her- can you get Flubenvet over there? It is a licensed poultry/goose wormer -keep her confined and see how she goes- is she eating/drinking ok? I would also worm "Gandolf"
If no improvement after worming i would advise taking her to a vet but i suspect the wormer will do the trick :) Keep us informed,
regards, David :)

Hi David

Thanks for your quick response :D
I am not sure on "flubenvet" i will have to call the vet and ask.

The reason i said i would use "pancur" is that we live remote Tasmania but are surrounded by dairy farmers so i guessed i can source that quicker (off the neighbour) so as to get her treated in the next few hours rather than in a day of so which will be when we can get into town to the vets and depending on if they have it or not.

She is eating and drinking although we think it may have been a few days since she has had water as she wasnt in the paddock with the others and not sure if she could have sourced fluids where she was. She seems quite good in herself maybe a bit tamer than normal.
